OK, while I applaud that SR has made it to 20 years, I’m not paying for the rules all over again. I just can’t, it’s not in my budget. Not even the PDF version. Is there an errata or update that I can download to I can add that to my files?
Oh, and I *LOVE* the new cover.
March 12th, 2009 at 16:55:08
There will be a document later that outlines the major mechanical changes; of which there aren’t that many. If the mechanical changes, new layout, art, and fiction isn’t enough to sway you now … well, it will get you down the road. ;-)
March 12th, 2009 at 23:10:20
That new cover is fantastic! Any way we can get that in a wallpaper?
March 12th, 2009 at 23:41:25
I note from the news page that DriveThru should be sending out a “limited time” coupon for those who have already purchased the pdf?
Does that include those who got the pdf before SR4 moved over to Catalyst? And if so, when are we likely to see it?
March 13th, 2009 at 01:01:35
I agree, that new cover looks awesome. And there is fiction to go along with it? Even better than whatever better than awesome is.
With regards to DTRPG, I’m eagerly awaiting the mentioned discount email from them. I do regret not buying my pdf from Battlecorp and not getting the proper Catalyst re-print and updates.
Any word on when that email will be sent out of past buyers from DTRPG? Perhaps I should just get it off Battlecorp anyways.
March 13th, 2009 at 01:08:34
A $5 off coupon at DTRPG…. that’s it for all the trouble of NO updates for so long… I am thankful you guys did something, and were able to get us messages… but… I’m rather disappointed to tell the truth.
March 13th, 2009 at 03:14:12
I hate you…. i want it… but… in spanish :(
March 13th, 2009 at 06:22:51
Hawkeye, I’m sorry you’re not satisfied with the coupon. As we’ve said before, our hands were tied regarding updates to the SR4 PDF — it wasn’t like we didn’t want to release it!
Phil, Falchion, as far as I know, the DTRPG coupons have been sent out. There’s a piece of fiction in the book for each chapter.
Kenshi, yes, there will be wallpaper at some point.
March 13th, 2009 at 06:44:33
OOOOOOOoooooo! It’s me burfday, my precious, and I want’s it!
Well, I can’t seem to comment under the other heading, so here’ll have to do. OK, if I get this straight DriveThru only does the ebook stuff not hardcopy, right? Hmmm, need to get the Digital Grimoire anyway but if i buy it here can they send it to a hotmail account for me to download later seeing as I don’t have home net access?
Aside from that quirk, echo the query on the limited edition copy of the 20th Anniversary rules – what’s the cover going to be like? Seeing as I’ve got a few quid in the bank I think I’ll plug out for it (just got to drop by the branch to sort out credit card stuff, darn it). Shame that shipping is going to approximately cost me +$30!
March 13th, 2009 at 07:26:20
DriveThruRPG does not do any physical products.
Neither of the services will email you the actual file (and most email servers will reject a file the size of SR4A) — you’ll have to download it on another computer, then copy it to a USB stick, burn it to CD/DVD, or something like that.
This is the front cover

Thank you very much for this. Yesterday I came home from a very fun SR4 session and found the DTRPG mail in my inbox. I bought the PDF immediately. I never had a chance. :)
And I love it. The design and layout and all the little improvements make Shadowrun4 look… Fresh. It’s like it came out yesterday. It can really hold its own against books that came out in the last few months. :)
I’m looking forward to the next releases. (Will the contents of the Anniversary boxed set be available as single purchases? This character-module system sounds very interesting.)
Thank you for keeping Shadowurn alive and well.
It’s very much appreciated.
-Matt

I’ll wait for the separate file on the changes/upgrades. I’m looking forward to the fiction, but as I said before, I need to see the actual stuff separately first.
I’m only weary because I don’t want to get stuck with multiple copies of the same book all over again.
March 13th, 2009 at 07:41:03
Hey Matt,
No plans on making the Runner’s Toolkit stuff available individually. I look at the Toolkit as something that each player in the group chips in 5 bucks to buy a copy, because a lot of the stuff is designed as “group resources” — some of them will stay with the GM, and others will get passed around the table and used at every game session (and during character generation, of course!). Also, a lot of the booklets are relatively small and aren’t really feasible as individual print releases.
March 13th, 2009 at 07:51:23
Ah, damn. It`s just that I’ve already got the screen, the booklet and “On the Run” and as I’m the GM for this group, I’d be stuck with two copies of each.
Although. the extra screen might be pretty nice.
…
Ah, what the heck. If this won’t cost a fortune you’ve got yourself another sale. *sighs*
March 13th, 2009 at 08:53:05
The screen will be sturdier and have new art, too… ;-)
The booklet actually has some new content that ties in with one of the parts of the Toolkit that haven’t been announced yet, too!
March 13th, 2009 at 09:30:15
Damn you, Jury, damn you! *shakes fist*
;)
You should be in Sales. *g*
(By the way: LOVE the new Archetype artwork. You kept the cool pieces and the replacements are all great. :) )
March 13th, 2009 at 09:33:26
Sturdier screen you say…hmmm…will it be similar to White Wolf’s WoD Screens. Just curious?
March 13th, 2009 at 09:42:11
That’s the plan, yes — similar to the screens that White Wolf and Green Ronin have been producing lately. I love ‘em!
March 13th, 2009 at 11:35:24
hmmm… no coupon for me then. Must have bought the original pdfs too early
March 13th, 2009 at 11:50:49
If you bought the original SR4 PDF from DriveThru and haven’t received a coupon yet, please use their customer support form to get in touch with them: http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/contact_us.php
March 13th, 2009 at 12:18:12
Hi Adam,
I’ve spoken to Drivethru customer service and they’ve told me to talk to the publisher as the coupons are coming directly from you.
I purchased the pdf way back in August 2005 if that is likely to make a difference. Rather than having this discussion on the message board any chance someone can email me direct?
Phil
March 13th, 2009 at 12:38:10
Hrmm… that’s not how I understand the situation to be, Phil. Drop me a line at adamjury@catalystgamelabs.com and I’ll see what I can do.
March 13th, 2009 at 12:56:48
Man oh man, can’t wait to get my hands on this!!
March 13th, 2009 at 13:02:08
Glad everyone seems to be liking this first Anniversary release. There’s more to come and all of them are equally cool.
And yes, you did read right, there are more goodies in Runner’s Toolkit than we have announced.
March 13th, 2009 at 13:14:27
I’m looking into purchasing Shadowrun 4E, hadn’t played SR since 2E. I hope you don’t mind but I’ve got a few questions. What’s the difference between your limited edition offering and your standard Shadowrun Anniversary Core Rulebook product. Will your Fourth Edition Anniversary Rulebook be in a hobby store near us? (I know I can buy the product online but being a small business owner, I always try to buy locally whenever I can.) Has the product release date been published? If so, what date is that?
Thanks in advance!
Tony
March 13th, 2009 at 13:26:52
Hey Tony. Welcome back to Shadowrun!
Both the regular edition and limited edition will be available in game stores. The limited edition will be individually numbered and have a fancy cover — we’re working out the exact details on that still. When we have the final word on how it will look, we’ll be letting everyone know via the website!
March 13th, 2009 at 14:51:36
So the Runner’s Toolkit things will not be released individually as print releases – but is there a chance of seeing them as individual PDF releases (the bits that aren’t physical by their nature, at least – a screen only makes limited sense as a PDF, but other bits do)? After all, for a PDF, size is not much of an issue, and we’ve seen small PDF releases before.
The idea of “everyone chips in 5 Dollars” may work well for traditional gaming groups, but since I’m the only Shadowrun-player within a 5 hour drive, I do most of my gaming on cons and online groups these days, and I’d still be interested.
March 13th, 2009 at 15:23:46
We’ve yet to decide how the components for Runner’s Toolkit will be released electronically, but parts of it will be, for sure.
March 13th, 2009 at 20:55:34
Probably a silly question, but figured I’d ask it anyway. Is there anyway we can get a ball park estimate of what the Runner’s Toolkit will cost? I know it’s a little early to be asking, it’s just that it has been a while since my group has played SR and I thought this would be a fun surprise them. I just want to know how much I should plan on saving :)
Keep rockin’ the shadows chummers!
March 13th, 2009 at 23:20:08
Oh well, i missed the $5 coupon, i thought the $25 price was a discount because of previously having purchased. Well, either way i love the book and will probably pick up a hard back version as well if i can get my paws on one. Good job people!
Its funny, this is the 20th anniv of the web as well. I think back to when i first started playing SR and recall that, indeed, there really was no web back then. WoW. Heres to 20more years of SR!!! Just try packing more into the core book so i dont have to get all the extra books…
March 14th, 2009 at 03:59:35
A question concerning the Runner’s Toolkit GM Screen – Landscape or Portrait format? With four panels I am guessing it’s portrait, but also hoping its not.
Thanks,
Shane
March 14th, 2009 at 07:54:05
By the way, you should check the advertisements that you are running online. I just caught it on RPGnet and… Well… Sorry, but that looks really, really grainy. Like a bad low-DPI scan.
March 14th, 2009 at 09:20:04
Glad to know that Adam is helping you out with the missing coupon Phil.
I never received mine either; think I bought it around the same time you did. But I decided to buy the SR4av PDF at full price from Battlecorp anyway. Figured that it would be good to get all my SR stuff under Battlecorp together so that they can get updated directly when re-releases come around.
Also it’s a small shout out of thanks to the CGL staff for keeping the dream alive. Here’s to another 20 more!
March 14th, 2009 at 12:47:47
Shane, the GM screen with be 4 panels, portrait, with an amazing new piece of wrap-around art for the entire front.
March 14th, 2009 at 12:48:44
Jake, we don’t have a final price yet, and we don’t speculate on prices until we do. The printing/shipping business is very, ah, interesting. ;-)
March 14th, 2009 at 12:52:34
Matt, thanks for pointing that out … that is certainly not the file that I created. I’ll see if I can figure out whose head I need to rattle.
March 14th, 2009 at 14:30:04
Hi Adam,
Thanks for the answer. I have to say that I’m not a fan of portrait screens these days, but I’ll withhold judgement on its utility until I see it.
I am quite looking forward to a nice panoramic of Seattle.
Regards,
Shane
March 15th, 2009 at 09:15:37
Well there goes my cash. You had me at limited.
March 16th, 2009 at 06:15:56
OK, all this stuff sounds freakin’ amazing, but what about the sixth-world encyclopedia that was mentioned a few months back? A whole book, in character, without those little post/reply things? Who do I have to… nevermind. But seriously, an in-game style reference book would be awesome on so many levels! I only heard it mentioned the once, tell me it wasn’t scrapped! On another note, how bout sticking some Shadowrun dice in that toolkit? i can’t find those anywhere. I think they stopped making them back when FASA was still in charge. Thanks guys!
March 16th, 2009 at 13:15:46
Have to say that the new layout and art is great. I would love to see the other core rulebooks get this anniversary treatement.
March 16th, 2009 at 16:38:58
Sixth World Almanac is still in the pipes, Demosthenes.
As for Shadowrun dice … stay tuned. :-)
March 18th, 2009 at 13:55:00
I must have missed it, but do we have a ballpark figure on release dates? I think Tony asked, but didn’t get an answer.
Also, I really hope y’all consider or use Larry Elmore for the limited edition cover. His SR1 and SR2 cover is absolutely classic.
March 18th, 2009 at 18:34:23
We don’t do ballpark release dates; when we have a street date, we’ll post it.
Larry Elmore’s original Shadowrun cover is on page 1 of the Anniversary Edition, if you haven’t seen the PDF yet!
March 19th, 2009 at 10:15:31
Bought the pre-order combo, did a look thought on every page. This book is amazing. Excellent job on the layout. The full color treatment makes the book really nice. I haven’t read the short fictions, but I like that fact that they were included (are those fan fictions?). I like the nod to the original 1st edition cover art on the inside front cover. I especially like the fact that the table of contents is hyper-linked (is that the correct terminology for PDF links?). BTW, I got a kick out of the sidebar advertisements for the expansion core books. Way to do product placement.
Things that I wish were done but weren’t:
The “see section on page XXX” annotations through out the book could have been hyper-linked to their destinations.
The entries in the master index that are for the basic rulebook could also have been hyper-linked.
Overall, great job, and I can’t wait for the hard-copy version to arrive.
March 19th, 2009 at 10:53:46
Mjolnir74: With our current workflow, those sections can’t automatically be hyperlinked, to the best of my knowledge … and manually hyperlinking them would be, frankly, totally brutal [there are thousands and thousands of entries in that master index!].
It would be awesome, though, and I’m continuing to work on ways to make our PDFs more user-friendly without adding hours and hours of grunt work to them. :-)
March 19th, 2009 at 21:05:50
I am highly excited about the new core book. All 3 of mine are falling apart. Is there a release date set for the physical copy? I really hope there was some serious proof reading since shotguns aren’t machine pistols. Regardless Catalyst has really produced excellent work since taking over Shadowrun.
March 19th, 2009 at 21:56:55
Shoryu, when we have a street date, we’ll announce it. :-)
March 20th, 2009 at 10:06:50
Love the new book so far (what I’ve read, anyway…)
Most amusing little bit so far: (pg. 273)
“John Smith – Licensed Holistic Chairopractor”
This had me rolling!
